Research and more research

Last time I left off with you, I was working on a product to market. Well, I became de-railed because I have been continuing to do more and more research about IM and how best to approach it.

As usual for most people I became mired in the details instead of doing anything important. I have been a victim of too much information gathering in the past. Sometimes it takes a little while for me to recognize that I have been "procrastinating" by rationalizing that I need to get more information. Have you ever done that?

When I finally made decision to get the product together and I got it finished rather quickly. It took about 6 hours give or take and now I still have a couple of things I msut do to finish the project up - I guess maybe another 6 or so hours.

I don't work at IM full time as I mentioned in a previous post that I have other business interestes and a full time family :).

Not to make excuses, but this is why I have been absent form this blog for so long now.

But, at least the product is ready for the sales letter to be written and the traffic methods to be employed. Writing the sales letter is a whole different budle of issues to address now. The sales letter has to be inviting enough to convert to sales. I might try a couple or thress of them to see which ones "pull" the best.

I will post the sales page url when it is finished.

Traffic development will test certain tactics I have read about - article writing, ppc campaigns and the like. I will track the different methods and report back.

I hope this isn't all too basic for everyone who reads this. But I was looking for a basic resource like this one when I started wanting information about IM and I couldn't find it out there. Everyone was selling nobody was giving.

Start A Blog -- A Fast And Easy Way to Have A Web Presence

It is much more difficult to be an Internet Marketer (IM) if you don't have a web presence. That isn't to say that you can't run an email marketing program where you can sell products with affiliate links through email promotion [there's a tip for you :) ]. Emails are deleted , they wind up in the SPAM filter, or they get buried under hundreds of other unopened emails. Email marketing combined with a web presence is a better combination. You can use email to promote and sell directly from the email and at the same time if the customers aren't quite ready to buy, you can direct them to your web site to continue to build the relationship with them.

But having a web site requires some level of commitment and some cost also (although there is a web site where you can put up web pages for free- more on that later in the next post or two). You have to select and register a domain name, you have to build a web site -- there are easy to use tools available, but you still have to have a little knowledge and skill, you have to pay for a web hosting service to host your web site, and a few other things like setting permissions on email, etc.

OR... you can have blog for free. This blog is hosted by Blogger.com and it costs nothing to open. Just go to Blogger.com and follow the easy to use instructions and you'll have your web presence in less than 30 minutes. A blog is a perfect way to provide a place to send your customers, a place to earn credibility with your customers, and together these two things lead to developing a relationship with your customers that you can monetize later.

In your blog you can put pictures and advertisements (see my post -- The Easiest Way To Become A Super Affiliate And Make A Bundle Of Money) to promote or to show people things depending on what you are trying to accomplish.

This may be obvious to you that you can open a blog, but it can be used very powerfully for marketing. I am using another blog to provide information to people in a selected target market. I am building credibility and developing a relationship with those people who read the blog and through trust and credibility that has been earned, they opt-in for more information. Remember, the email list is the "Holy Grail" of Internet Marketing.

So build your blog or many different blogs, I have around 10 of them. Write some great informative posts about you, about what you know, about anything, or about a subject you want to monetize. Why be an IM if you don't want to"monetize"?

You can also monetize your blog by adding Google Adsense to your blog, you can set up widgets -- they are little modules of advertising of affiliate programs you can join if you have a web presence -- one such one is with Amazon.com, or you can accept other direct advertisements.

So get a web presence and monetize!

The Easiest Way To Become A Super Affiliate And Make A Bundle Of Money

I have been researching so many Internet Marketers (IM) my computer hard drive and email are jammed with different affiliate links, programs, offers, etc.

I recently came across an awesome program where Armand Morin, a long time and very successful IM, who has sold over $45 million worth of products online is launching a brand new affiliate program with his successful products and everything else he has in the pipeline. How hard is it to acutally do the basics that the "gurus' promote?

How hard can it be?

Well I am going to find out. In the last few days, I launched a new blog in an area that I am considered to be very knowledgeable. Next I started to implement the strategies that I have learned over the last couple of months. This is a case study to determine if the "average guy", that's me :), has a chance to make it work the way the IMs tell you.

I can't give you the specific details at this moment because I don't want the results skewed in any one direction, but I will come back with a regular report so you can track the things I am doing and to keep tabs if it works or not.

So here is what I have done so far and what I am going to do in the next few days to set up the sales effort:

-- I have launched a blog and I am currently in the process of putting up at least 10 posts that have solid and informative content that people in the area that the blog targets would want to know. I have named this technique "give them the silver -- sell them the gold".

-- I will be creating a product that is connected with target market I am going after.

Building an email list - The Holy Grail of Internet Marketing

In the last few days leading up into the Christmas Holiday, I received a couple of emails from two top Internet Marketers. I have subscribed to a few of the IMs (Internet Marketers or Internet Marketing depending on the context) and I have also unsubscribed to a few IMs. The thing I look for is that the IM is actually trying to help me or trying to constantly sell me. If you are like me, you are looking for the one who is trying to help you first then sell you second.

Building an email list

This was one of the subjects of the emails I received today. It was had a couple of good tips in it about the things you will need to do to start building an email list. Without an email list to market your products, you don't have a business. So it was recommended drive traffic to your web site or blog and capture the visitor's email through a squeeze page, use an autoresponder and offer the visitor some value in return for the email address. Something of value being an eBook or a good report on a genre that your web site or blog caters to.

The whole idea behind IM is that you monetize your efforts. And one of your biggest efforts is going to be building your email list. But how hard can it be to do it? Start a blog or website, post some good informative content, drive traffic to the blog or website, capture opt-in email addresses through a squeeze page -- right?! We'll see. I started the other day to implement the tips I have picked up over the last couple of months and will use those exact strategies I mentioned above to see if the average guy can do it.

My next post will keep you up to date with my progress and the details of what I am doing. My initial goal is to capture 100 - 200 opt-in email addresses.

Learn to write and write to earn

One of the things I definitely understand about making money in IM is that it is important to be able to write clear enough to get your point across and with enough "style" to compel people to action. All copywriters and marketers, whether they create ads for television, for radio, for print, for the Internet or any other medium, know they won't sell a product or service without the "sizzle". I don't necessarily mean that the copy has to be exciting, although that can be a plus depending on what you are selling --- I don't think "exciting" would be the proper way to sell funeral services to a family in their time of mourning -- so you need to know when to interject excitement or whatever feeling you need when you write your copy.

Learn to write

If you plan to try your hand at IM it would be in your best interests to learn how to write some decent "sales letters". Some sales letters are basic and some are elaborate pages you see that are formatted with big headlines, testimonials, calls to actions, etc. Click this link to see a basic sales letter. If you think you lack the talent to write a sales letter, just study the ones that you feel "compelled by" and look at what about the "ad copy" interests you. This could be a good starting place to begin your learning. Study advertisements that are written for magazines and for the newspapers to see different styles. Write down some of the phrases and words that you like. Before you delete your SPAM email, look it over. Some of the best advertising lines can be found in SPAM. Why? Because the SPAM has to catch your interest before you delete it. Pick up a book on copy writing at the store for more tips.

Write to earn

There are different ways to create income through IM. You can build a list of customer emails to market to in the future or you can make one time sales or you can do both. But all of these ways require some writing. Hopefully, you will have picked up a few phrases and a few words that you think you can use to create some excitement or action. There is no better time that now to begin writing to earn. In a future post, I am going to cover how to create some fast income through writing articles around 300 - 400 words. To give you an idea of how short 300 - 400 words is, this post is over 400 words.

My Bio

After making the first post about getting started in Internet Marketing (IM), I decided to let you know where I am coming from. We all have different backgrounds and we can all learn from where someone has come from and how they think.


A Quick Bio

I knew very little about IM, however I am experienced in the area of business as I own a decent volume machine shop with a business partner. Before the machine shop, I was a general contractor working in construction, before being a contractor, I worked as a construction project manager for another company and before that I was working in restaurants. I have worked most of my life with my hands and body. I don't recommend it.

I am not college educated, I started but never finished -- so I had to do something other than work for someone my whole life at barely above minimum wage. That something was to own a business. So I started in construction because it was the only thing I knew and I could get it started for under $10,000. Actually, under $5,000 because I got a business partner to go in with me. The machine shop was an existing business that we purchased and now has become my major source of income. Buying the machine shop was an adventure. We knew exactly nothing about machining, but we were confident that we could learn. At first it was disaster -- our lack of knowledge did major damage to our income. But experience is a good teacher (someone else's experience is the best teacher) and we learned from our mistakes and made corrections and became successful in the machining business.

Now after many years of hard work trying to make a good income, I see people in IM making gobs of money with no investment, no plant or property, no risk of injury, no wearing out and breaking down of their body and basically sitting on their butt. It didn't take me long to decide to investigate this type of business. I went to a seminar that featured both Real Estate Investing , Internet Marketing and other business opportunities. It was at that seminar where my eyes were opened to the possibilities of making some money sitting on my butt also -- even though I was inexperienced in this type of business.

Now my existing business didn't really offer my any insight to the things I needed to do to launch an IM business -- hey I worked with my hands - I wasn't a techno wizard nerd (no offense meant to anyone - just trying to use emphasis to make my point) so I did my own research. I signed up for a few of the Internet Marketing guru's newsletters, blog posts, web sites and downloaded some reports some free and some I paid for. I found myself facing information overload. It is very difficult to filter through all the stuff out there and to know who to listen to when you have never met them face to face or spoke with them on the phone.

You may be thinking the same thing about me. I wouldn't blame you if you did and I think it would be wise of you to be suspicious who I am and whether you can trust the information I am putting out. Well, this is another reason for this post. I am trying to be someone you can relate to - and I hope you will relate to me. I hope we can have a meeting of the minds and learn something through this journey of mine.

While you may have a different background than me, you can be successful at IM. Why? Because with little or no money and no experience, you can basically duplicate almost everything the "big boys" of IM have done. You can get information for free and you will probably have to pay for some also. But it isn't necessary. You can start as an affiliate and start making money without risking a single cent -- I am doing exactly that (this will be the content of future posts).

Getting started in Internet Marketing

For the last couple of months, I have been doing a fair amount of reading and researching on the topic of Internet Marketing. One of the things that beckons to me the most is the fact that you can create residual income through your efforts. While I have read that many of the "big guys on the block" have made millions, what about guys like me? You know, the guy who has the dream of making millions.

The Gurus' Secrets

Well, according to the "gurus", all I have to do is buy their packages where they give away their "secrets" for as little as giving them your email address (so they can market you forever) to paying around $500 or more for a package to learn from. I am not sure if it will be all that "secretive" after several thousand people buy the gurus' packages and begin to implement the "secrets".

What I am getting at, is that there is information overload out there. And it seems that every single Internet Marketing guru is trying to "market" you with a package they obtained from another Internet Marketer that now has been pushed "downline" to coin a phrase from network marketing.

Dreaming of Success in Internet Marketing

Even in lieu of all of this, I still believe in the Internet and I still believe in the dream that with the right attitude, consistent work effort, persistence when faced with obstacles, applying the right information I can make the money all these gurus promise me.

So I am going to try out some of these gurus' techniques and try some of their eBooks and softwares. Plus, I am going to post the things I do. At first, I expect, we will see more failures and slow results. But, if I am on track, we should see more successes and faster results until the growth of my Internet Marketing business begins to explode.

One thing is for sure.... I am going to learn a lot.
